Chapter 7.4: The Oases


Oasis Enviorment
  • It usually had fresh water and vegetation
  • It provided shade and drinking water for animals (camels, livestock)
  • They varied in size
  • They were either springs or trapped water

Oasis Adaption
  • People often set up shelters near oasis
  • They served as places to rest
  • They grew crops around them due to the wet soil
  • Date palms that grew around oasis provided food, shade, and irrigation
  • People traded around oases
  • Nomads built large communities around oasis thus making them SEDENTARY

Desert Environment:

  • Many sand dunes (can be up to 800 ft.)
  • Windstorms/ Sandstorms/ Flash floods
  • Oases
  • Droughts can last for years
  • Up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit during the day
  • Below freezing at night

Desert Adaptations:

  • Camels for transportation
  • Head coverings for heat protection
  • Loose-fitting clothing to keep cool
  • Tents as temporary homes
  • Nomadic lifestyle
  • Raise livestock for meat and dairy

Chapter 7.5 The Coastal Plain


Coastal Plain Environment
  • Cost of the peninsula
  • Rain not a lot not to little
  • Fresh water river beds
  • Natural harbors along the shore
  • Very flat and dry for most of the year

Coastal Plain Adaptations
  • Trade routes along water and land
  • With the land across the plain people would farm
  • Built dams, deep wells, & irrigation systems
  • Natural harbors would be used for the trade center
  • Crops: vegetable, fruits, Th& whole grains; Fish along cost
  • Used tree's wood to build their boats

Chapter 7.6 The Mountains

Mountain Environment

  • 20 inches of rain fall each year
  • 1,000-12,000 feet tall
  • on the western and southern end

Mountain Adaptations

  • Terraces
  • mud brick buildings
  • Water containers: hollowed out trees and underground storage
